“Could I Have This Dance” was written by Nashville songwriters Wayland Holyfield and Bob House for the 1980 John Travolta film Urban Cowboy — the movie that turned mechanical bulls and Gilley’s honky-tonk into a national craze and kicked off the pop-country boom of the early ’80s. Amid a soundtrack full of barroom rowdiness (“The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Lookin’ for Love”), Anne Murray’s tender waltz was the soft, romantic heart of the whole film.
Here’s the curious part: the song was never meant to be a solo. It was written as a duet, and the plan was to pair Murray with Kenny Rogers. Murray loved the song so much that she recorded a demo singing the male lead part in a lower register, adding her own harmony on top, expecting Rogers’ voice to replace hers later. When negotiations with Rogers’ camp fell through, the label surprised her by wanting to release her demo-style recording exactly as it was — low register, self-harmonies and all. It shouldn’t have worked, but it became one of the biggest hits of her career: a #1 country single in November 1980, a Top 40 pop crossover, a Grammy winner for Best Country Vocal Performance, and a four-time Juno Award winner in Canada. More than four decades later, this gentle three-quarter-time promise remains one of the most requested first-dance songs at weddings — proof that sometimes the demo is the magic.
